1. Column chromatography
If stationary phase is installed in the chromatographic column, it is called column chromatography.
Column chromatography can be categorized again by its size, structure and making method. Therefore, there are packed column chromatography, capillary column chromatography or open column chromatography.
GC and HPLC are column chromatography.

2. Planar chromatography
Stationary phase is planar shape. When mobile phase passes, the sample compounds are spreaded on the planar plate and separated. Planar chromatography includes thin layer chromatography and paper chromatography.
If stationary phase is spreaded evenly on glass plate or plastic plate, or directly make the stationary phase into thin planar shape, it is called thin layer chromatography.
If chromatography uses filter paper as stationary phase or stationary phase carrier, it is called paper chromatography.

3. Paper chromatography
It is liquid chromatography using paper as carrier. It is a kind of partition chromatographies.
It uses filter paper as a support to form a stationary phase after saturated with water. When organic solvent mobile phase which is not mixed with stationary phase passes through stationary phase, each intended-separated compound is partitioned continuously between two phases, then, the compounds are separated.
